Fog blamed for wreck that closed I-10 overnight – WLOX.com – The News for …

JACKSON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) -

Heavy fog and speed can be a bad combination. That’s exactly what happened in the overnight hours on I-10 in east Jackson County. A multi-vehicle accident shut down the interstate for several hours.

The fog shrouded the interstate like a blanket. Drivers ran into it, and then started running into each other.

Frank Duke with Acadian Ambulance was one of the first to arrive on the scene.

“We found six 18 wheelers, several of them were turned over either in the median or off to the side of the interstate,” Duke explained. “We also had what we believe to be four passenger cars involved in the accident.”

Despite the carnage on I-10, emergency responders considered themselves and the victims of the chain reaction wreck very lucky.

“It could have been a lot worse with the smoke and the fog,” Jackson County Emergency Services Director Earl Etheridge said. “We could have had more injuries than the six that we had. Just grateful there were no serious injuries. There’s no hazardous materials involved.”

For police and emergency responders, this was a classic case of preparing for the worst and hoping for the best. And also receiving a lot

Multiple accidents shut down I-10 – WALA

JACKSON CO., Miss. (WALA) – Motorists were stuck for hours on Interstate 10 in Mississippi after multiple accidents shut down a portion of the interstate. It happened early Tuesday morning, April 2, 2013 between Franklin Creek Road and Highway 63 in Jackson County.  Both the eastbound and westbound lanes were closed.

Moss Point police say, it began when on vehicle ran off the roadway and created a domino effect.  We’re told, several tractor trailers were involved but it’s unclear how many.  Police did say no injuries were reported.

Crews worked throughout the night to clear the scene.  Both eastbound lanes and one westbound lane were opened to traffic around 5:30 a.m.  Officials expect the clean up to be completed by 8:00 a.m.

Multiple vehicle crash, closes I-10 in east Jackson County

JACKSON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) -

Officials blame fog for multiple crashes Tuesday morning that forced them to close a section of I-10 in Jackson County.

Johnny Poulos with Mississippi Highway Patrol tells WLOX News the accidents involved five 18-wheelers. The wreckage has forced officials to close both east and westbound lanes of I-10, but Poulos says he expects eastbound traffic to start flowing again by 3:30 a.m. Westbound lanes will stay closed longer.

Eastbound traffic is being rerouted to Exit 69, which is Highway 63 in Moss Point. Westbound travelers are being diverted to the Franklin Creek exit.

Jackson County authorities say there were four separate accidents around 1:15 AM Tuesday near mile marker 72. According to Moss Point Fire Chief Clarence Parks, nine people were transported to area hospitals. No word on their condition, but he says there were no fatalities.

WLOX’s Doug Walker is on the scene, and we will update you as we get more information on WLOX.com and on Good Morning Mississippi starting at 4:30 AM.

All lanes of I-10 on Mississippi River Bridge now open

All lanes of Interstate 10 on the Mississippi River Bridge are open after a crash caused the lanes to be shut down Sunday morning, authorities said.

State Police sent out an email alert around 11 a.m. notifying drivers about the crash and traffic jams.

An update sent around 1:30 p.m. notified drivers that the crash was cleared.

A car hit an 18-wheeler around 10:45 a.m., Baton Rouge police spokesman Cpl. L’Jean McKneely said. Authorities are not sure what caused the accident, he said.

Hazardous material crews were called to contain a leak after the 18-wheeler began leaking diesel fuel, McKneely said.

No injuries were reported, he said.

Notre Dame football awaits BCS title game opponent

Notre Dame (12-0) beat Southern California, 22-13, to complete its first unbeaten regular season since 1988. That’s also the last championship year for the school that produced a legion of the sport’s most memorable figures: Knute Rockne, the Four Horsemen, Paul Hornung, and Joe Montana — heck, even Rudy Ruettiger.

CFT: Notre Dame remains No. 1 in BCS rankings

As is the case each and every season, each and every week, any omission below is not on purpose, it’s merely intentional.

BCS A MESS NO MORE
Thanks to some expected results, the muddled mess that had been the BcS and the chase for the crystal football the past couple of glorious weekends cleared itself up immensely in Week 13:

– No. 1 Notre Dame’s win over unranked USC
– No. 2 Alabama’s humiliation of in-state rival Auburn in the Iron Bowl
– No. 3 Georgia’s cruise over non-conference rival Georgia Tech.

With the confluence of those three events, the following is now known: the Fighting Irish have claimed one of the two spots in the BcS championship game, maintaining their position as the only eligible unbeaten left and putting themselves in line for the football program’s first national title since 1988.

And the Golden Domers’ opponent?

That’s crystal clear as well.  Well, more than likely it is.  The Tide will square off against the Bulldogs in the SEC championship game next Saturday.  As UA and UGA are ranked 2-3, respectively, in the latest BcS ratings, and barring an unexpected development of epic

Every Sunday throughout the season, the Walter Camp Foundation honors two players, one offensive and one defensive, for their performances from the previous day.  Through 12 weeks, just three players from non-automatic qualifying conferences had been so honored, and none since Week 4.

This Sunday, the “lesser” conferences nearly matched that season-long total.

In its weekly press release, the fine folks at the Camp Foundation announced that Fresno State quarterback Derek Carr and San Jose State defensive back Bené Benwikere were named as the award’s National Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively.

It’s the second time this season that non-AQ schools have swept the weekly honors.

Carr, the brother of former NFL overall No. 1 draft pick David Carr, set a school record for highest completion percentage in a game, completing 28-of-32 passes (.875) for 452 yards and four touchdowns and no interceptions as the Bulldogs defeated Air Force, 48-15.  The win clinched a share of the Mountain West title for the Bulldogs.

Benwikere tied a school record with three interceptions – including two in the fourth quarter – and was credited with eight tackles, one tackle for loss and one pass
