Man jumps from car, is struck and killed on I-10

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Emergency crews had to shut down westbound Interstate 10 at two separate locations Sunday night.

The first incident happened at 59th Avenue where a man jumped out of a moving vehicle and was struck and killed by another car, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

The car’s driver stayed at the scene and waited for police, DPS said.

The freeway was also closed at I-10 and Riggs Road, according to DPS.

Two tractor-trailers and another vehicle crashed, causing one of the semis to roll.

DPS said the drivers suffered minor injuries.

No other information was immediately available.

GONZALES – A car driven by an unlicensed 16-year-old Baton Rouge boy ran off I-10 and hit several trees in the median, killing a rear seat passenger.

State police said the accident happened Saturday about noon west of La. 22.

The car involved in the crash had four occupants.

Gary Clark Jr., a rear seat passenger in the vehicle, was not wearing a seat belt and sustained fatal injuries from the crash. The driver and other two passengers were wearing seat belts and sustained minor injuries in the crash.

The accident remains under investigation.

16-year-old Baton Rouge boy dies in I-10 crash in Ascension Parish

A 16-year-old Baton Rouge boy died in a single-car crash in Ascension Parish Saturday at about 12 p.m., Louisiana State Police said.

Gary Clark, Jr., was riding in the backseat of of a 2006 Cadillac CTS and was not wearing his seatbelt, police said. He was fatally injured when the Cadillac, driven by an unlicensed 16-year-old, ran off the side of I-10 westbound west of LA Highway 22 and hit several trees.

Fatal bus accident closes I-10 westbound in eastern New Orleans

The New Orleans Police Department is on the scene of a fatal accident on I-10 West near Michoud Boulevard in eastern New Orleans. A  tour bus and a car were involved in the accident which occurred shortly after 10 a.m., police said.

One person died in the crash, police said, and several others were injured. The extent of the injuries is not known at this time and no further information was immediately available.

Westbound I-10 near Michoud Boulevard was closed temporarily and drivers near the area should expect a delay of two to three miles.

Lakeland woman dies in car vs bus crash near MM 199 on I-10

UPDATE (May 1, 2013 – 10:15 A.M.)


TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) – A Leon County school teacher was killed early Wednesday after colliding with a charter bus on Interstate 10.

Chris Petley, public information officer for Leon County School District, tells WTXL that the victim in the crash, 22-year-old Abby Fishburn of Lakeland, Florida, was employed as a first year teacher at Deerlake Middle School. According to Deerlake Middle School’s website she was a science teacher at the school.

Troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol say Fishburn was killed after colliding early Monday morning with a charter bus.

According to a report from FHP, the crash happened at 3:30 a.m. May 1. Troopers say a charter bus was traveling east on I-10 near North Monroe Street. Troopers say Fishburn was driving the wrong direction, going westbound in the same lane and eventually collided with the tour bus.

There were 43 people on the tour bus. WZVN in Fort Myers reports the bus was filled with high school students from Collier and Charlotte counties who were returning home from Pensacola after competing at a USA Skills Competition.

The woman was in her 20′s was driving the car and traveled the wrong way on the 199 exit ramp, hitting the bus head on. She has been pronounced dead. Her identity has not been released pending notification of family members.

The bus was carrying about 40 high school students from Pensacola back to Naples, Florida. About 20 of them were taken to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital and have been released.

FHP says the eastbound exit ramp 199 onto Monroe and two eastbound lanes off of I-10 are still blocked in that area.

A Pace man is dead after a hit and run crash overnight on I-10.

Florida Highway Patrol says Brianna Strum, 25, of Milton was traveling east on I-10 around 3 a.m. when she rear ended a Dodge Charger driven by Miguel Bonet, 30, causing both vehicles to lose control.

The Charger flipped several times. Passenger Robert Roy, 33, of Pace was thrown from the car and was pronounced dead on scene from his injuries.

Bonet and two other passengers in the Charger were also injured in the crash.

Strum fled the scene and was later discovered and arrested by Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Deputies.

She is being held in the Escambia County Jail and facing multiple charges including DUI manslaughter and leaving the scene of a crash with a death.

Two People Hospitalized in Late Night Banning Crash on I-10

Two people have been hospitalized in a multi-car crash along Interstate 10 in Banning which also prompted a sig alert in the area, CHP reports indicate.

The crash happened around 9:30 p.m., when a Kia sedan and a motorhome collided on the I-10 eastbound at Ramsey Street, a CHP dispatcher tells Patch.

Following the crash, the two left-most lanes were shut down to traffic, as Cal Fire worked to free at least one person that was involved in the wreck, according to CHP logs.  The dispatcher tells Banning-Beaumont Patch that the two transported did not have major injuries, rather just “complaints of pain.”

While crews were working on helping the people involved in that wreck, a third vehicle crashed just nearby, on freeway offramp, according to the CHP.  The driver in that vehicle was not hurt.

A sig alert was issued at 10:15 p.m., and the roads were clear by 11:07 p.m., the CHP said.
