EDMONTON – A Friday evening collision in the Smoky Lake area has left a 10-year-old boy in critical but stable condition. Two other children, a six-year-old boy and a nine-year-old girl, are in stable condition and are being treated for injuries.
Two STARS air ambulances picked them up at Redwater Health Centre and brought them to the University of Alberta Hospital, said Kelly Brossart, a spokeswoman for STARS.
The accident occurred when a pickup truck collided with the side of the car at around 6 p.m. Friday at the intersection of Highway 28 and Highway 831.
The intersection is near the community of Waskatenau, approximately an hour northeast of Edmonton. The children were all passengers in the car, and all of them were wearing seatbelts. Neither of the drivers were injured, said Const. Gary Hyde of the Smoky Lake RCMP. Traffic was rerouted around the intersection for several hours before the intersection was finally reopened at 11:30 p.m.
The cause of the collision is still under investigation, but alcohol is not considered a factor.
