Semitrailer overturns on I-10, driver killed

CRESTVIEW — The driver of a Peterbilt semitrailer was killed Wednesday morning after his truck veered off Interstate 10, overturned and caught fire.

The identify of the driver had not been released later Wednesday pending notification of next of kin, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The semi was heading east near the Crestview exit about 11 a.m. when it left the road and struck a 2012 Ford E-350 pickup truck that was stopped on the shoulder, the FHP reported. It then traveled across both lanes, struck a guardrail, overturned and caught fire.

The driver was dead at the scene, the FHP said.

The pickup truck’s driver, 48-year-old Ronald King of Pensacola, was not injured, according to the FHP.

Both drivers were wearing seat belts.

Damage to the semi was estimated at $75,000, according to the FHP. The pickup sustained $10,000 in damage.

No charges are expected, the FHP reported.
