EL PASO, Texas– A pedestrian was killed on Interstate-10 near the Raynolds Exit ramp in the early-morning hours of New Year’s Day after jumping from a vehicle, police said.

Police responded to the call at 1:46 a.m. Wednesday morning, and the eastbound lanes of I-10 were closed from Copia to Raynolds as officers investigated the scene.

According to police, Fred Merriwether, 32, was driving a 2006 Dodge Magnum with Vielka Cruz, 27, as a passenger.

The two were in an argument when Cruz opened the door and jumped from the moving vehicle, and she was struck by a 2010 Nissan Sentra that was traveling along I-10 at the same time, police said.

Cruz died at the scene, police said.

Police said neither Merriwether nor the driver of the Nissan Sentra was intoxicated at the time of the crash. However, police believe alcohol is suspected to be a factor on Cruz’s behalf.

Police said they are continuing to investigation this incident.
