Orleans Parish deputy killed in I-10 crash

An Orleans Parish sheriff’s deputy driving on Interstate 10 crossed a median Sunday and hit another car.

Authorities said the crash happened near Irish Bayou about 6:25 a.m.

Investigators said Deputy Brunell Magee, 35, was driving a Dodge Intrepid eastbound when he lost control of the vehicle, crossed the median and struck a Nissan Juke traveling in the opposite direction.

Magee died at University Hospital. He was assigned to the McDaniels Work Transitional Center and joined the sheriff’s office in 2010.

“We regret this tragic loss of one of our own,” Orleans Parish Sheriff Marlin Gusman said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Deputy Magee’s fiancee and the entire Magee family. On behalf of the sheriff’s office, I also want to express our concern for the other driver in this incident. We hope he makes a full recovery.”

The driver of the Juke, a 61-year-old man, was listed in stable condition.

An investigation is underway.
