One person killed in St. James Parish car crash

A St. James Parish woman was killed Friday night when the vehicle she was riding in left the roadway while exiting Interstate 10, State Police said. Laura Barrios, 65, was not wearing a seatbelt and suffered fatal injuries in the crash, State Police said.

The single-vehicle crash happened around 6:15 p.m. as Barrios’ husband, Raymond Barrios Jr., 70, was exiting westbound I-10 at Louisiana 641. For unknown reasons, Raymond Barrios lost control of the 2007 Buick Lacrosse, which left the roadway and struck a tree.

Raymond Barrios was wearing a seatbelt and suffered minor to moderate injuries, State Police said.

Driver impairment is not suspected. However, a routine toxicology sample was taken from Raymond Barrios.

State Police did not say in the news release if there was ice on the road. Icy conditions were reported on highways and bridges across south Louisiana Friday, as the area was pelted with sleet and rain, coupled with sub-freezing temperatures.
