One juvenile dead, one critically injured in wreck on Loop 410, SAFD says

SAN ANTONIO — Firefighters and police were called to the northwest side of San Antonio around 5:30 a.m. for a motor-vehicle accident on N.W. Loop 410 eastbound, near I-10 west.

Police said a male driver in his 30s was traveling westbound on N.W. Loop 410 when he tore through the concrete median, crossed over into oncoming traffic and struck the vehicle traveling eastbound on the highway.

According to the San Antonio Fire Department, the victims included a female driver in her 20s and two juveniles — one child died and the other suffered critical injuries in the head-on collision.

All individuals were transported to an area hospital. Police said the 4-year-old boy was in critical condition and the child that died was a girl, approximately 6 years old. Both adult drivers were said to be in stable condition.

The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the 6-year-old as Amaya Smith.

All lanes were shut down and traffic was being diverted onto Interstate 10. At 7:30 a.m., officials said clean-up efforts would take at least an hour.

According to SAPD, the initial indication is that alcohol and drugs were not a factor in the crash.
