Update: Two killed after wrong-way crash on I-10

EL PASO, Texas Authorities are investigating a deadly wrong way accident on Interstate 10 near Vinton, officials said.

A representative for the El Paso County Sheriffs Office said two people were killed in the accident, which was reported around 8:45 p.m. Monday.

Officials said a caller reported a wrong-way driver in the area, which soon turned into a head-on collision.

The victim who was in a red car died at the scene, and the wrong-way driver died shortly after, officials said.

A medical helicopter was called in to rescue the man who drove the wrong way but did not make it in time, said deputies.

“The driver of the BMW x3 was showing signs of life, and so because of that a helicopter was called in,” said deputy Mariano Valle, “When the helicopter arrived it was determined that the driver of the BMW was deceased also.”

Deputies say a man in a silver BMW was driving the wrong way on the eastbound lanes of the Interstate when he crashed head on with the red minivan.

“We got a call about a vehicle traveling the wrong way on Interstate 10, shortly thereafter we got a call that there was a motor vehicle accident,” said Valle.

Both victims were men, in their late 20s to early 30′s.

Investigators don’t know how far the driver of the SUV had been going the wrong way, but are investigating.

Deputies have not released the names of the victims.

For a while deputies feared that a baby was involved in the crash because they found a car seat in one of the cars, however after searching the area and bringing out a search helicopter they determined there were no other victims.

All eastbound lanes including the gateway have been reopened.

Deputies say they will be investigating to see if any alcohol was involved.
