Motorcyclist dies in fiery crash

THIBODAUX, LA (WAFB) -

Authorities
said a man was killed after the motorcycle he was riding was rear-ended and
caught fire Thursday afternoon.

Louisiana
State Police reported the victim was identified as Thomas Grems, 54, of Baton
Rouge. The crash happened on LA 308 just north of Thibodaux a little after 4:00
p.m.

According
to troopers, Grems was headed north on LA 308 on a 2012 Yamaha motorcycle when
he happened upon traffic congestion and had to slow down. Investigators said he
ended up behind a 1998 Honda Accord. They added Joseph Elfert, 87, of
Labadieville, was driving a 2002 Ford F-150 behind Grems and failed to stop
before hitting the motorcycle.

Reports
indicate the motorcycle burst into flames after the crash, with Grems pinned
between the truck and the car. Troopers said Grems died in the fire. He was
pronounced dead on the scene by the officials with the Lafourche Parish
Coroner’s office.

LSP
reported Elfert was not hurt in the crash, but the driver of the Honda Accord
sustained minor injuries. Officials added alcohol was not a factor in the
crash, but a blood sample was taken from Elfert for a toxicology analysis by
the LSP Crime Lab per protocol in deadly crashes.

Charges are
also pending as the crash remains under investigation.

Troopers added
the drivers of the truck and car involved in the crash were wearing seatbelts
at the time.
