CALIMESA — A 51-year-old Hacienda Heights man died after his car struck an SUV, spun out of control, rolled down an embankment and struck a tree in Calimesa Thursday, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said.

The crash was reported shortly after 10 a.m. on westbound Interstate 10 near County Line Road, CHP Officer Darren Meyer said.

The victim — whose name was withheld pending notification of kin — was driving a Volkswagen Passat westbound on I-10 when he lost control and his rear bumper struck the front of a Chevrolet Suburban driven by 70-year-old Cherry Valley resident Diane Cunningham, Meyer said.

The Passat spun off the road, down the freeway’s north dirt embankment and crashed into a tree. The driver was taken to Loma Linda University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Cunningham wasn’t hurt, Meyer said.

He said authorities didn’t suspect alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash.
