Icy overpasses close bridges, portions of I-10 – WDAM

Three people, including an infant, died in an accident on an icy Highway 11 in Pearl River County tonight. Pearl River County Coroner Derek Turnage said all three of the victims were in a single vehicle. According to Emergency Management Director Danny Manley, at least 30 accidents happened on I-59 in Pearl River County in just one hour.

Dozens of accidents across South Mississippi have been blamed on frozen overpasses and bridges. That’s why officials have closed the Biloxi-Ocean Springs, Bay of St. Louis, Pearl River and Jourdan River bridges. The Popp’s Ferry Bridge was closed earlier in the evening, but has since reopened.

Interstate 10 is also closed at the Louisiana/Mississippi state line. State Trooper Jason Gazzo tweeted around 8:30pm that Hwy 90, I-59, and I-10 at the MS State Line all had some type of closer or blockage.

Crews with the Mississippi Department of Transportation are working to salt every bridge on Interstate 10. MDOT District Engineer Kelly Castleberry told WLOX News crews were sent down from Meridian to help with the emergency road work.

Sixteen vehicles were involved in a crash in the south bound lane of Highway 49, near School Road. And the West Hancock Fire Department reported working an accident involving 27 cars near the Mississippi/Louisiana state line.

Gulfport Police Sgt. Damon McDaniel said they’re asking everyone to stay off the roads tonight. McDaniel said if you have to drive, reduce your speed and use extreme caution.
