A 10-year-old girl has been given a ticket for reckless driving after she crashed her mother’s car – into a DMV office.

Police said the girl’s mother parked up her SUV yesterday outside the suburban office in Denver, Colorado, and switched the engine off leaving her two daughters in the car.

Her younger daughter then apparently slipped into the driver’s seat, started the car and put it into gear – leaving it to crash through the DMV office’s front window.

The huge vehicle came just inches from the rows of plastic chairs laid out in the waiting room.

Police Sgt Andy Coleman said the two girls, aged 10 and 12, were in the black GMC Envoy as it slowly rolled through the window.

The girls’ mother jumped into the car through the side door and stopped it from doing more damage, he added.

No one is thought to have been injured in the incident.

Despite having to be at least 15 and a half to apply for a permit, anyone 10 or older can be charged with a crime in Colorado.

That meant police gave the girl, who has not been named, a ticket for reckless driving.

Police Sgt Coleman added the girl’s mother avoided getting a ticket because she insisted she did not leave the car running.

The DMV office reportedly suffered little structural damage.

1st lesson is you should never leave your keys in the ignition for any reason…even if the car is off!
