Deming man killed in I-10 crash

A local Deming man was killed early Wednesday morning in a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 10, at about mile-marker 48, located 26 miles east of Lordsburg.

According to a New Mexico Department of Public Safety report, at 6:30 a.m., Donald Shay, 75, was driving a 2007 Chevrolet pickup when a tractor trailer rig rear-ended Shay’s vehicle. The impact caused Shay to veer off the roadway.

The tractor trailer then struck another trailer before all vehicles came to a stop.

Shay was pronounced dead at the scene.

The official cause of death will not be known until an autopsy is performed, according to Sgt. Damyan Brown of the New Mexico State Police.

The driver of the second tractor trailer was transported to a local hospital with non-threatening injuries.

The driver who was at fault, and caused the crash, was uninjured. He was cited for careless driving.

It was determined driver inattention was the factor in the crash.
