El Paso Sheriff’s Deputies are continuing to investigate a deadly accident that left two men dead on I-10 east near mile marker 3 at Vinton, TX late Monday evening.

EPCSO were dispatched to a head-on collision at approximately 8:45 p.m. Monday evening near Vinton. When they arrived, they found a gray BMW X3  had been traveling the wrong way on I-10, heading west bound in the east bound lanes. The driver of the BMW hit a maroon Toyota Sienna minivan head-on.

The force of the crash caused the minivan to end up on the outside shoulder of I-10 facing the wrong way, and the BMW turned on its passenger side in the median.

The driver of the minivan was pronounced dead on the scene and emergency workers detected a faint pulse from the driver of the BMW and requested a helicopter to air lift the driver to the hospital. However, the driver of the BMW passed away before the helicopter arrived on scene.

Sheriff’s Office Special Traffic Investigators along with the Crime Scene Unit were called to the Vinton exit to investigate the crash. I-10 east at mile marker 3 was closed for approximately six hours while Sheriff’s Deputies investigated the crash.

Witnesses called 911 to report that the BMW was traveling in the wrong direction on I-10, and was also speeding before the crash happened. Sheriffs’ Deputy Mariano Valle said the department will conduct a full investigation and speak to all witnesses.

At this time, Sheriff’s Deputies believe both men were not from El Paso. They have not identified either of them, and toxicology results will be conducted to determine if alcohol was a factor in the crash.
