Deadly car crash on Routes 5 & 10 in Northampton

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – Police are investigating a two car accident that happened on North King Street in Northampton early Friday, where an 84-year-old Westfield man was killed.

The crash occurred at the end of the Exit 21 off-ramp on I-91.

According to Mary Carey of the Northwestern D.A. office, the collision occurred at the intersection of North King Street and Elm Street in Northampton Friday afternoon.

Carey said the car driven by the 84-year-old man sustained heavy damage on the driver’s side where the front end of a pick-up truck hit.

Northampton Deputy Fire Chief John Davine told 22News that they had to use the jaws of life to free one of the men, who was trapped.

Deputy Davine said both men were conscious and alert when they were loaded into the ambulance.

Both male drivers were transported to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, where the Westfield man was pronounced dead said Carey. The other driver was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

North King Street was re-opened around 4:25 p.m. after being closed at the Exit 21 off-ramp.

The cause of the collision is under investigation by the Northampton Police Department and the Massachusetts State Police Detectives Unit assigned to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office.
