El Paso County Sheriffs Deputies said 24-year-old Jesus Barrera from Bayard New Mexico was driving the wrong direction on I–10 when he crashed head on into 30-year-old Josh Allen.

Allen was pastor at Grace Bible Church off Missouri Avenue. He leaves behind a wife and a 9-month-old son.

His parents arrived from out of state Tuesday. His father, who is also a pastor, is mourning the loss of his son, but finds comfort in his faith.

“Was it the right time for him to go? Not according to my standards,” Rev. Dr. Dan Allen said. “But it is according to Gods and I have to accept that and I will I’m going to grieve and we are mourning. But we are trusting in God.”

A memorial service will be Monday at  7 pm at Las Cruces First Baptist Church. The Grace Bible Church building is too small to hold the expected crowd.  Everyone is invited

Monday Night

Allen was heading to El Paso to pick up his brother from the El Paso International Airport. The crash happened right before 9p.m. around mile marker 3 outside Vinton, NM.

Allen was pronounced dead at the scene.

Barrera had a faint pulse when paramedics arrived. A helicopter was called in to airlift him to the hospital, but he passed away before it arrived.

NMSU student, Phil Berg saw the entire thing. He and his girlfriend stopped to try to help.

“We got out there before a couple of others did. The entire driver side was crushed in,” Berg said. “You couldn’t see the body. There is no way anyone survived that crash.”

Berg and his girlfriend feared a baby was involved in the accident.

“There was a baby seat in the back seat. We were listening for crying or a baby,” he said.

Allen’s  9-month-old son was not with him. Toxicology results will determine if alcohol or drugs were involved.
