2 women, 3 kids from Gilbert killed in I-10 crash

Five people are dead after an overnight collision involving three vehicles occurred along eastbound I-10 north of Picacho Peak, the Arizona Department of Public Safety said.

The victims, all from Gilbert, were identified as:

  • Shelly Renee Blackmore, 49.
  • Danielle Blackmore, 20.
  • Three children, two of them 12 years old and an 8-year-old.

A pickup truck driven by Tracy William Blackmore, 47, of Gilbert, was traveling westbound near Milepost 213 when the front left tire tread separated, according to DPS spokesman Raul Garcia

Blackmore lost control of the pickup and it traveled left across the depressed dirt median and then entered the eastbound traffic lanes of I-10 where it collided at an angle with a commercial truck tractor pulling a semi trailer, Garcia said.

A third vehicle, a passenger car, struck the pickup truck, Garcia said.

Blackmore was airlifted from the scene with serious injuries. The remaining five passengers traveling in the pickup truck were pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the commercial truck tractor suffered minor injuries and was transported by ground from the scene to Casa Grande Regional Hospital and then transferred to Chandler Regional Hospital.

The co-driver of the commercial truck tractor was not injured.

The driver and passenger of the third vehicle were not hurt.

The right lanes of eastbound I-10 have reopened near Picacho Peak following the overnight fatal crash, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

The left lane of the freeway remains closed at milepost 213, about two mile east of State Route 87. There is no indication at this time when the left lane will reopen. Delays remain possible in the area.
