MONTAIN HOME, Texas – Two El Paso area men died Wednesday morning after they were ejected from a pickup that wrecked on Interstate 10 near Mountain Home, Texas.

Two women in the same truck were in stable condition in hospitals as of 2 p.m. Wednesday.

Jesus Antonio Felix, 24 of El Paso, and Noel Reyes-Mendez, 22 of Anthony, Texas, were killed at about 8:30 a.m. after the 2007 Toyota truck they were in rolled over on Interstate 10 East near Mountain Home, officials from the Texas Department of Public Safety said.

The truck was driven by Amber Calderon, 19 of Canutillo, Texas. It was traveling east near the 488 mile marker when a passenger’s cellphone rang, distracting the driver, according to an initial investigation by Trooper Jim Behrens.

The truck drifted into the median and the driver took evasive action, but the truck rolled two or three times, Behrens said.

Felix and Reyes-Mendez were not wearing seat belts and were ejected from the vehicle, Behrens said. They died on scene.

Calderon was taken to Peterson Regional Medical Center with injuries that were not life-threatening, and a third passenger, Haley Holguin, 21 of Anthony, Texas was flown to University Hospital in San Antonio. She was in stable condition as of Wednesday afternoon.

Felix and Reyes-Mendez worked as officers at the Southern New Mexico Correctional Facility, They graduated from the academy in 2012, according to Gregg Narcantel with the New Mexico Corrections Department.

The truck’s four occupants were El Paso residents headed to South Padre Island for spring break, Behrens said.
