13 Injured in Tour Bus Crash Off Westbound I-10 Freeway

A tour bus run by Hacienda Heights-based Travel Tours Americas International veered into a ditch just off the westbound Interstate 10 today, injuring 13.

Unsafe speed is suspected to be the cause of the accident, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The bus was exiting at Baldwin Park Boulevard at 4:30 a.m. when the driver failed to negotiate the curve and veered into the ditch, authorities said.  All 38 occupants, including the driver, were trapped in the bus for about an hour, City News Service reported.

The bus was en route to Eagle Rock from Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, California Highway Patrol Officer Rodrigo Jimenez said in a news release.

According to preliminary reports, the bus, after leaving the roadway, struck storm ditch, a chain-link fence, and a light post, Jimenez said. A total of 13 passengers were injured, 11 with minor injuries and two with moderate injuries. They were transported to local hospitals by ambulance for treatment, he said.

The rest of the passengers were transported to their destination in a different bus.  The Baldwin Park Boulevard off-ramp was closed for four hours for the investigation and clean up.

No arrests have been made or charges filed.
